MARY JANE KOLAR, CAE*, is a partner in The Alexandria Group, Inc. As its president and CEO, her primary focus is on business development and client service.
A dynamic executive with nearly 30 years of association management experience, she knows the intricacies of virtually every aspect of the organizational process and has the depth required to individualize each client’s response to today’s changing needs.
During her distinguished career, Kolar served as executive director for: The American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences; The Business Marketing Association; The Association of Government Accountants; Altrusa International, Inc; and Association for Women in Communications. Additionally, she was executive director for six association foundations.
A recognized leader in the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE), Kolar chaired its Education Section Council, served on the Board of Directors for four years, and was also elected to its Foundation Board for two terms. She was selected to be among the first class of ASAE Fellows and was the first elected chair of the Fellows program. The Key Award, the highest honor given by ASAE, was awarded to her in 1990. A member of numerous committees for ASAE, Kolar is featured in the Society’s newly published book, Managing Association Turnarounds. She has been a guest speaker on this and many other association management topics at the annual meetings of ASAE, the International Association of Association Management Companies, Association Forum of Chicagoland and GWSAE. She was appointed to the Accreditation Commission for Association Management Companies.

M. LYNN MITCHEL, managing partner, brings highly honed skills in financial and operations management to The Alexandria Group, Inc.
With her career based in both the corporate and association worlds, Mitchel developed an extraordinary analytical ability which enables her to rapidly identify client problems and, just as quickly, to determine effective resolutions.
Corporately, Mitchel’s background includes executive-level positions with Coroon & Black; Midwest Steel, a subsidiary of the Beatrice Companies; Ambassador Philip M. Klutznick; and Dovenmuehle, Inc., Mortgage Bankers. Her association experience began as a member of the executive staff for the American Dental Hygienists’ Association and the American Oil Chemists’ Society. She later became deputy executive director for the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences; the Association of Government Accountants; Business Marketing Association; and Altrusa International, Inc. She has also served as Executive Director for the Stencil Artisans League and the National Association of Government Accountants.
Mitchel has been a member of ASAE for over 10 years, active in both its Finance and Administration Section as well as its Membership Section. In addition, she served on the Membership Development Committee for the Greater Washington Society of Association Executives.
STEVEN P. BENSON, Esquire, serves as general counsel for The Alexandria Group, Inc. He is an expert on tax exempt and nonprofit organizations and practices extensively in the association area. He has over 15 years of experience representing various categories of tax-exempt groups, particularly 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(6) corporations. Benson is a partner in the law firm of O’Brien, Birney and Butler in Washington, DC, where he has practiced since 1985, after four years of active duty as a Judge Advocate General in the U.S. Navy. He brings a wealth of experience and expertise to all aspects of corporate, tax and association law.
J. THOMAS ECK is The Alexandria Group, Inc.’s technology expert. He holds a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Boston College and a master’s degree (magna cum laude) in computer science from the New Jersey Institute of Technology. With over 15 years experience, Eck specializes in designing and implementing customized, relational, multiuser data base systems for a wide variety of organizations. Particularly skilled in communicating with clients about their complex needs, Eck is able to translate their requirements into technically sound solutions. Clients receive the benefit of several alternative strategies to accomplish objectives. Interface of the membership data base with financial, certification, annual meeting, and fulfillment programs is his unique speciality. System security and protection within these systems is also a key component. Future-oriented and technologically advanced, Eck enhances value for those he serves.
LINDA HUNEYCUTT, CPA, brings accounting and auditing expertise to The Alexandria Group, Inc. Her 20 years of experience consist of six years in accounting with the Department of Justice and 14 years in public accounting, working extensively for not-for-profit organizations including recipients of federal financial support. She has earned the AICPA’s Certificate of Educational Achievement in governmental accounting and auditing and participates in the CPA profession’s standard-setting process, as a respondent to requests on exposure drafts and discussion memoranda issued by the AICPA and the FASB, affecting not-for-profit organizations. In addition, she is an active member of the Virginia Society of CPAs and its Northern Virginia Chapter, as well as the American Society of Association Executives.
TONDA F. RUSH, J.D., works with The Alexandria Group, Inc., in the area of government affairs. Her special expertise is focused upon grassroots representation and wide member involvement in public policy formation. She is an association executive with significant experience as a chief staff officer as well as in senior level management positions with the National Newspaper Association, the American Newspaper Representatives, the Newspaper Association of America, and the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press. Rush’s career began managing small newspapers in Kansas and included serving on the William Allen White School of Journalism faculty at the University of Kansas. An author and speaker, she has been a director and committee member for a number of other major organizations such as the American Bar Association, the Annie Casey Center for Children and Families, National Federation of Press Women, and the William Allen White Foundation. She has also been a newspaper reporter, practices law, litigated before major federal regulatory agencies, lobbies on Capitol Hill and served as an expert witness before congressional committees. Her background is a unique combination of skill in communications and government relations which is of significant benefit to clients.
MIMI STEWART is responsible for The Alexandria Group’s communications program. A seasoned writer, she has edited community newspapers and national magazines, created and directed public relations departments and developed marketing efforts for nonprofit organizations. In addition, she has owned her own communications company. Throughout her career, she has brought distinction to the organizations she has served, including being the recipient of these awards: the Illinois Press Association’s Editor of the Year; the Academy of Hospital Public Relations’ MacEacherns; and the American Society of Association Executives’ Gold Circle. Stewart has held executive communications positions with the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences, Altrusa International, Inc., Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital and Clinics, and Central DuPage Hospital and Health Services. An active community volunteer, she served on the Wheaton (Illinois) Plan Commission for 16 years and sat on the DuPage County (Illinois) Board of Health for 10 years, four years as its president. Clients find her wealth of expertise and experiences invaluable.
